I bought this tiny plaque on eBay where it was listed as porcelain but now that it has arrived I realise that it is wafer thin metal (possibly copper). It is very finely painted with a still life of grapes. Sadly it has a very fine crack (hard to see). It's outside my area of knowledge so can anybody identify it for me. My gut feeling is that it is early 19th century but no ideas other than that. There are old paper labels on the back so I don't think that it's from the lid of a patch box or similar. It is a little beauty, John.
I tried if Wallington Enamel would get me anywhere, but only got offers to whiten my teeth.:hilarious:

It might be a duty stamp. That looks like a Bilston type enamel to me.

If the stamp is contemporary with the piece, perforations were introduced in 1847.

Good point. It may be later, stamps were used to collect taxes on things like auction sales.

I suspect the stamp was added later and is not contemporary to the plaque - just a gut feeling.

    It’s really lovely.
I like little mysteries like this with just enough tantalising information to lead you along.
Although it is more fun if they eventually give up their secrets!.
I’ve got a Japanese enamel brooch that’s holding onto its secrets and it drives me nuts every time I look at it!.
Last time I looked up a patent number on the back of an earring Google insisted it was a coffee machine

Does the brick beach make sense to anyone? That's what the stamp looks like to me.

Nice, the painting style has a Regency look imo. It also looks more finely executed than the average Bilston work you find on a snuff box etc, so I wonder if it was set into something else of a bit more prestige. Probably not a box (unless a decanter box), but perhaps something ornate.

It looks much more detailed and refined than anything by Bilston I have seen on sites, if that is anything to go by. I wonder if it wasn't made by another manufacturer.
