    New member here, this thread caught my eye so thought I'd share a photo. This appears to be a tin type, not certain the year so mid 1850's to turn of the century I guess. He had on checkered clothes, what look like Beatles boot to me :). His white shirt cuffs near the hands have an interesting pattern. Reminds of a pattern I'd do if I was playing with an Etch-O-Sketch :), straight lines with no curves in the pattern. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

    I could need some help here!
    Ready to open a new topic if needed.
    They are not mine and we are trying to find out who's funeral this might have been.
    We think it must be prior to first WW, there is a vehicle (car) on the pic.
    The flag has not been indentified yet.
    And we think the location is the jonction of Rhode Island Avenue and the 17 th street, Waschington.

    @kristiaan,
    Edit: I just took a closer look at that image with the caisson holding the body......the flag over it I can’t identify either.....and think I was wrong in my earlier comments...so deleted them! Why not seeing if a place like the Smithsonian might not try to identify your images for you!!!
    My husband has been also trying to dig something up from the images, but so far, nothing concrete!!

    Yes, and if he stood up it looks like he would be about 7' tall! Definitely lanky :) I really should try to date that photo. I thought maybe his checkered suit & shirt cuffs might help me date it but I haven't researched it yet. I really like the tin types.

    It looks like the flag has a shield of some sort on it. Could this be a clue or is it something you have looked into already?

    I too would say the year is in the 1908 - 1916
    The Car is actually a Taxicab and most likely to be an Electric Car. I was not able to nail down a manufacturer, but in style it looks like a Detroit. It also resembles a Baker, though I do not know if they made cabs. I did notice that service vehicles lacked fenders. The comparison image is just to show the cab driver, of an electric cab, sitting up high at the rear.

    This assumes that the flag is symmetrical.

    Not likely to be an American prominent in military or government as the coffin would be draped in an American flag. Might be a diplomat. Could even be fraternal.

    Flag looks like it has the Russian (??) double headed eagle at the very top maybe.....albeit a bit blurry....

    Just wanted to thank all those that helped me get started in trying to identify 19th century photos. So to keep this thread going, here's a cabinet that appears to have been trimmed at the top, I believe it might be from around 1882-1888, based on clothes & card stock, I think. Lovely girl.
