    >As a friend of mine used to say, that child was whupped with an ugly stick!<

...whupped with an ugly stick *at birth.* I have heard that expresssion with "at birth" since moving south back in the early 1960s. Also as others have no doubt heard: "Has a face only a mother could love."

The only polite thing to say would be bless her heart. ;)

It is really hard to read the handwriting, but the general content is that the writer is answering immediately to some woman and tells her that someone can stay with him, that this person is in good hands and that there is still no danger at the place he (or she) lives... Also he says something about his mother in law, but that I cannot decipher...
Unfortunately that's all I can tell.

Ah, I forgot to say that I was wrong with the signature, but I would have never figured out the artist's last name from his signature...

After looking closely at the artist sigs on that webpage, I can now make out most of Emil Beithan surname. That long looping whatever in the middle of the name originally looked like an older script capital G to me, but on closer look, it is either the "l" of Emil of the left back side of the capital "B" of Beithan. Just to the right of the long looping whatever are the 2 vertical humps of the capital "B." To the right of the "B" I can see "eit" and at the end, far right, an "n."
