Mystery plate

Here’s an unusual piece. It’s quite crude in decoration but I feel it’s quite early due to the entirely hand painted decoration. The enamels including the butterflies have a Chinese feel and the man too looks pseudo oriental.

I’ve not seen an English plate like it and I’ve not seen a Chinese plate with the light blue ground.
I’ve seen some French chinoiserie but only on faience.

Any ideas?

 

It's a cool design! Looks like a cross between the pope and fu manchu - definitely not Chinese, just a bit of fun to have around IMO

 

Looking at the chip, granular suggests bone china rather than continental hard paste so does point back home eh

 

Yes that's the direction I'm looking in now. It's nothing special but it is a novelty.

 

Strange combination of characteristics, fascinating! The butterflies and leaves look a bit like an early Victorian Staffordshire production, perhaps a crude replacement for a broken plate from another manufacturer, by someone who isn't quite sure what they are painting. The man could be a medieval monarch, maybe, but why has he got a handkerchief on a pole? The hat does look like a pope but a pope wouldn't show his legs like that. Looks a bit eastern European to me. The blue border looks wrong, somehow. What is it??? Please report back when you learn more.

 

I believe he is holding a parasol.
