Just saw a thread in the Art forum with a box that reminded me of one I have, so I dug it out. It is about 6 x 4 inches and 2 inches tall. Looks all hand painted to me, and is heavily crackled with a few specks of lost paint. The box has broken apart at one of the hinges which is too bad, but it does show the inner material of the box, and the lid is still very stably attached.
So, would you agree that it is papier mache, and how old do you think it is? I've seen similar referred to as antique, Georgian, Victorian.
    Thank you.

Late Victorian from the costumes. (And they are meant to be costumes, not clothing.)

I had not heard that term before, sounds more live a lacquer coating.

Papier mache items, even the furniture, are very lightweight and always lacquered. Does it feel lighter than wood?

It is not heavy, but I would not say especially light. Could be would, but it does not really seem like it. It is thin-walled. Where the hinge is broken you can see the inner material and it looks like several thin layers, feels a bit spongy.
