Is anyone good at acid testing gold results? Can I look at mine?

I purchased the ring as 18k.

1st or top line is top half 14k acid which did not budge and 2nd half of scratch the 18k changed it in color

2nd scratch or bottom one is 14k on top again and 22k on the bottom which turned green.

what the?!?!? I am really confused now

please help. I tried googling the answer

how old is your test kit?

Have your acids mixed on the scratch? That can throw the result.

 

Could it be plated?

 

I have same confusion testing. I know if no change at 14k but darkens at 18k its at least 14 they say. My kits not old..is there no 18k marking in ring?

 

No mark on the ring and my kit is only a few months old, or that’s when I purchased it. Would it stick with 14 do well if it was plated?

 

They did mix eventually but not until much later in the process

 

it looks like you took of a lot of metal on the rubbing.......i don't see it's plated..

neither do i see a ring......!!! .......

 

I wanted be sure to get a really good scratch

I really want to help you here. I know it's tricky to get the hang of acid testing.
Your are way too heavy handed with your "scratches".
You are going to create a flat spot on the ring, or worse.
If your solutions are running together, it is because you are using too much.

Your streak should be long and distinct, so that several drops of acid can be applied without them running together. See below.

 

I went hard on it in case it was a heavy plate No pic yet. Still too big. I tried to save from my phone. Gotta hit up the pc later

I've found gold and silver scratch stone testing a bit hard to get the hang of as well, esp. as I don't do it too often. So it feels like I always have to relearn how it works. But one trick I do when testing 14K, is to bring another positively 14K item (I happen to have a broken ring I use for this) and use that as a test case. So I test that at the same time making a separate mark, and this helps me to visually compare results. I suppose this also reassures me that my acid is still good.

 

Yes! , having a few test pieces on hand for comparison is really helpful.
