Featured How can you tell if Kashmiri papier-mâché has some age or is modern?

My little 6 year old daughter picked this up today at a thrift store. We figured it was probably papier-mâché and on doing a little research probably Kashmiri? My question is, how can you tell if it's modern or not, or can you? There is nothing on the bottom except black with crackly grey-type lines. My daughter said it must be old because there was dust on it , I told her our house must be quite old then . Thanks all!

 

The decoration looks Russian to me. Like the Russian lacquer boxes, only floral designs.

I think it is wonderful that your 6 year old daughter picked a nice item like this. She has the makings of a great antiquer.

What is it intended to be? A candle holder? A vase? Just curious... that will not help with identification. Is there any writing on it anywhere, even around the edges of the design?

It's a little candle holder only 5.5" tall. I couldn't find any writing even looking through a loupe. I thought perhaps this might be initials within the flower but it may just be part of the design.
