Thank you Aaroncab and komokwa for your replies I know is about impossible to I/D a stone by pictures but I googled jade and serpentine stone I I’m kinda leaning towards jade only because jade is a hard stone and serpentine stone is soft and I tryed the jade scratch test and it doesn’t scratch so I’m guessing it’s a hard stone anyways thanks again for the responses ...Matt

What did you try to scratch it with?

The internet said use the blunt side of a pair scissors and I tryed needle as well figured it wouldn’t scratch hard stone and luckily it didn’t.

Steel can be as soft as a 5 on the mohs hardness scale...serpentine can go up to a 6. So - take whatever scratch result you got with a grain of salt. Jade(jadeite or nephrite) can be particularly tricky to ID correctly- some others will be along I'm sure to give you better advice on how to get it ID'd.

It's not jade; if it were they'd have done a better job on his hands. I forget what it's called now, but there's a stone the Chinese use to imitate jade that has a special name. It's not serpentine.

Hello aquitaine thanks for your response it doesn’t have any cracks that’s a white streak going through it.

This forum frequently gets questions just like yours on similar Asian stone items. It seems like it is very difficult to answer unless you are someone who deals with Asian stone carvings on a daily basis. No one who posts on this forum seems to have that level of expertise, but they always make an honest effort to help. I have no expertise in the field but I can tell the difference between skillful and sloppy workmanship when I look at the carving. The Asians only put their best carvers to work on stone they consider valuable, so when I see a crude carving like this one, I know the stone itself, whatever you want to call it, isn’t considered valuable in Asia. For me anyway, that’s all I need to know, and I’m happy to let others debate whether we’re looking at Jade, Serpentine, Shoushan, Onyx, or whatever.
