Like I said N8.....family !!!

All the silver....that gorgeous stunning silver, that you keep showing us....it holds no memories 4 U !

Mom would pull out the silver on all family occasions.....every piece of it has my childhood embedded in the metal ......the chit chat, the smell of her brisket...that silver knife Dad used to cut the Challah with on the Sabbath.........

Yes...once sold.....it goes where it goes....and it would be nice to think someone else would cherish it ......but that's an unreal expectation !

Still......as long as it's mine..........it remembers how I used to drive my Mother nuts by using the salad fork.....for the entire meal !!!!

 

That's why I'm hoping the OP will polish it up and try it on for size, see if she wants to keep it. If not, Mr N8 is right, you can't be concerned about what happens to it after you sell it. Right now, the memories are still fresh, but if the family doesn't want to use it, well then, silver prices are very robust now.

Oops! I thought about that when I posted but was too lazy to go to the original post to see if I could determine he or she, so I just guessed, wrong as it turns out.

It's just a hard pill for me to swallow that however long any of this has been in existence and what ever path it has lead to get to where it is now, that it just gets melted down, seams like a shame to me. That's kind of why I'm interested in most of the stuff my grandparents have, not just the silver but a cabinet that has been in existence for a couple hundred years, what the world was like when it was built and somehow it has survived to this day. I'm guessing that silverware doesn't hold that awe factor the same way though. Honestly this whole process isn't about the money, yes it's important and we don't want someone to lie and give us a fraction of what something is worth, but it's kind of about getting the things that are valued into the hands of people that value them and the only metric I can go by is monetary.

It's just a very difficult dichotomy of finding a balance. At times it feels like these items hold all the potential in the world, at others it feels like they were just trinkets that my grandparents collected that hold little value to anyone else.

I don't know why all of this is important to me, money does play a role but my whole family takes care of each other financially and no one is hurting for the money but when I think about a vase that sold for a small fortune before my grandfather passed and any one of these items could be something like that but we wouldn't be the wiser. It just makes me want to have due diligence in my research. I'm getting the information that I would need to do my own research into monetary value in the future which is why this is all just cataloguing for when my dad and/or myself retire.

I have free reign on keeping basically anything I want and there are a few items that I have picked out, but my house is very techy and modern and I don't really have anywhere to display any of it.

Also sorry for the attitude earlier, something just got under my skin I guess.

And for the record books I am indeed a male.

*edit: also using it is out of the question, I eat entirely from take out windows or the microwave, would be a crime against humanity to use actual silverware lol. Maybe my mom would enjoy it but isn't it difficult to clean? I'm under the impression that it's not supposed to be polished very often.

From the older generation - no it really would not be a crime against humanity to use sterling flatware to eat take away or microwaved food. And it is not difficult to clean.
