Bomb squad confiscated it? Oh yeah - cat swiped it and lost it under the fridge.

I am not an expert but it looks totally pre-revolutionary to me, except of those little stars next to the mirror

My grandfather had a little one of those vessels to carry his nito tablets in too.

I vote for rouge as well. But that is all I got.
    Very nice item.

I might have some ideas of the story of giving such a gift in blockade Leningrad... People were exchanging their best loved valuables for a kilo of potatoes. Probably, that person had a source of potatoes.
Concerning the absence of hallmark I found the following information: from 1917 to 1927 there was no standard of hallmarking in the USSR. That might point out that it was definitely made by 1927.

Let's add two more boxes I got from the same source. It was a very productive day at flea market ;)

The stars look Soviet, but stars where also very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. I don't know if such a 'decadent' compact would be decorated with Soviet symbols.;)

That could be it, I would think this was pre 1920. There is also another thing, not every maker bothered to have his silver and gold marked. Infuriating for collectors and sellers like us.

Lucky you! Post-war Italy, I would say. They were mostly made in Florence, if I remember correctly.

Anyone see some similarity to this box? Or is it just me....
Also there is one place I didn't look for markings yet.
Assuming mirror was added later on something could be under it.

What a beautiful, historical story in a ring. Can you show a pic?

I haven't photographed it yet, but this is a good reminder that I should.:)
