This was allegedly from my grandmother’s mother’s mother...my grandmother turned 94 in December 2017. That puts it late 1800’s to early 1900’s. What are your thoughts? It’s got a couple cracks on each side of the headboard, finish is nice. No big nicks. They (someone) cut it down professionally from one size to a full now.

It has a neo-gothic feel to it. Very nice.

Age wise, geo gothic would make sense but this frame has no square or hard edges, I’m thinking Elizabethan era just because I’m not exactly sure on who bought this and when. The family was originally from Oklahoma and Texas, but that doesn’t mean much to me. The rounded curves and the turned parts all seem like they would be more current than geo gothic, but I have no idea, so thank you for the reply!

I think this is likely a late American Rococo (revival) piece circa 1860. Unusual to see something like this in oak, as they are usually mahogany or, sometimes, walnut. This is patterned after high style pieces made in New Orleans but believe it to be a regional example. If you look at beds from the workshop of Prudent Mallard, I think you will see some similarity.

I really doubt this was cut down from a larger size since the full size was the standard large bed for the time period. Queen size and king size beds did not come until much later. It does look to be refinished. It also looks a bit dry to my eye and could probably use some additional finish or oiling. It may not even have much finish on it and has just been stripped. The third and fourth pics show some remnants of old finish that probably should be cleaned up a bit before anything additional is done.

The Elizabethan era is 16th century. There is no way that this bed resembles furniture from that era or have any where near the age.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Actually, I love it, but as Brad said, sincerely doubt it would have been CUT DOWN!!! from a larger size!!!! Think about it.....how would you cut that head board narrower and still maintain the correct fit???? 3/4 and double were pretty much standard sizes for that period!!! Looks pretty nicely refinished....or at least stripped....again, as Brad said!

They don't sell for a ton of money right now, but I doubt that's a consideration. If I had that, I'd be using it!

I have more, and it appears Brad is very accurate in his reply. This was purchased by my grandfather's mother. Grandpa would be 96 today. They lived in Louisiana, but I am not sure if this was purchased as an antique back them, purchased new, or what. They brought this from LA up to Oklahoma, and during that move the headboard cracked. They said it was moist in LA, but it dried out so fast in OK, it cracked across the entire headboard and they had a pro repair it and they did a great job. It was not cut down, I was mistaken. The finish has not been touched with anything since it has been here in CA. It's been used the entire time, but is nice and solid and sought after within the family. When Evelyb30 says these don't sell for a lot right now, what would they have sold for at their peak? And what is current sale pricing now? I am in CA, San Diego if that matters.

Highly unlikely that it was purchased new by your great-grandmother in c. 1860. If your grandfather was born in 1914-ish, his mother would likely have been born only 25 or so years before in the Late Victorian period. The bed dates to the Mid-Victorian period.
