I posted about this on the old E boards many years ago and somehow it got put aside and I just found it recently. So back to square one so to speak. Is this known as redwork? It is machine stitched, many of the blocks have names in them. I believe it to be from North Dakota. Very lightweight and thin, finished around all the edges. Thank you! cover.jpg

    Hi,
It is a beautiful friendship quilt. Do most of the designs have a name or date on them? It is really nice especially in the bright red. Keep it out of the sunlight. I have one that I hand stitched a sleeve on the back top and hung it on the wall as a headboard. It was in a room with no sunlight hitting the wall. My great grandmother made it 1889.

Thank you! I would say maybe 1/3 of the blocks have names. It is very thin, not like a quilt I am familiar with. Just the blocks on one side and a full red back.

    Hi,
Sounds like a coverlet NOT a quilt for warmth but a cover to cover the bed like a bedspread.

I can tell you exactly what this is because I have one made by my mother for her mother in the late 20s/early 30s. I can't recall the exact date right now. The patterns were printed in the local paper. Women would transfer them to a square and embroider them. The red strips in between were then used to sew the squares together. Back in the 80s, I took the top and quilted it to a backing and gave it back to my mother. I still have it put away. On one square she embroidered "To Mother from Thelma" and the date. On the opposite square I embroidered my name to her and the date.
