Hello I live in Darwin and my mother-in-law has past me a special family object that I want to insure but have no clue where to start.
The object is a aboriginal brass identity disc which as i have found out is the only one in existence .Canberra has the moulds from which they where made but their are no originals, the brass disc has the kings crown and number 760 stamped frount and back .My wife's family had businesses in Darwin right from the start with a carting business in 1914 when they where issued to business owners to control the number of aboriginal workers in the city limits . If you didn't have one you were removed. So how do you value a extremely rare one of a kind object .
Any input would be greatly appreciated

Any pics please? If you believe the piece to be unique and historically important, then I'd suggest contacting a Museum relevant to Aboriginal artefacts.

Their is a book written latley called brass dics , dog tags and finger scanners that talks about the disc and early NORTHERN Territory history . It does talk about the labour conditions and the protection of aboriginal peoples from mixing with chinese traders at the time .A pretty dark time in Darwin.

if it's the only one known in existence , the only way to arrive at a value..is by selling it.

Untill then, I doubt anyone will want to insure it.

That is a tricky one isn't it

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

A very rare object! I would say there are no originals known... It's possible that other families have passed them down. But still, you could treat it as one of a kind if nobody can confirm there are any others.

Is there any chance that there are any people in or near Darwin who would be able to do an estimated valuation of something like this? I realize it could be a sensitive topic.

And welcome to Antiquers, @Alan Anderton !
