I am having second thoughts on its age because the blue seems too bright...any ideas ...it is 8 inches tall and 6 inches wide. cat7.jpg cat1.jpg cat2.jpg cat3.jpg cat4.jpg cat5.jpg cat6.jpg

Oh, could be one of a kind - over heated in the oven to crack the glaze!

    Hi,
For some reason it looks very much like an old Persian piece. I am intrigued.

    Hi,
I am sorry but it was the painting on the cat that said Persian. The painting on the other one just does not have the Persian look.

I emailed the ebay seller with the dark blue base and asked him/her how he/she knew it was Persian...his/her response was "Know style and decorating and glaze." none of the other item up for sale or completed are Persian...but I guess sometimes you just get a feel for things...Gregglass did you think the one with opening on top, bottom or both, didn't look Persian....the molds seem very close.

    Hi,
The duck looks Persian. it is such a fine line between painting skills, the others may be Persian but they are not what I expect Persian painting to be. It is hard to explain. When I see a certain style a vibe says Persian. When I was there in the early 1960s I saw a lot of antique painted pieces and a lot of newly made pieces which just did not have the same feelings.

Greg knows his Qajar, he has shown his knowledge in other Qajar style threads.:)
And yes, Quincy's very cute cat is Qajar dynasty Iranian.

There is one thing to consider when looking at the Qajar pieces that don't look quite Qajar:
Iranian ceramic production got gradually worse towards the end of the 19th century. Tourism was flourishing, and so were people who wanted to cash in on Persian ceramic fame. The usual tourism story.
At the beginning of the 20th century ceramics manufacture had become so bad that even the tourists couldn't be fooled. Almost all production ceased, but was picked up again mid 20th century. Those later manufacturers put more emphasis on quality, and some very nice pieces were produced, and are still being produced today.
I think the Qajar pieces that are not quite convincing date from ca 1900. Made with inferior glazes by ceramicist wannabees.

I was looking through some old photos I took and found out I took images of this already along with a Chinese plate...It reminded me I DID ask about this before, ....but people only responded about the plate...good memory bakersgma !
