With the holiday hub-bub, only a few "finds" were found here at our house ... but first, some catching up on other's finds.

evelyb - gorgeous jacket ... I would soooo have worn that 25 pounds ago.
s-o-s - wishing you an uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery.
    cxgirl - CUTE furniture!
verybrad - nice book rack (my husband would want to melt it though)

Here was a pre-Christmas find at the TS. A six board blanket chest (looks like maple to us, but we're not sure) ... learned about snipe-hinges from this piece - never saw them before and didn't know what they were at the time (sure do now)
I had to convince my husband that there would be room in the house for it ... and that $65.00 was a decent price.

Really trying to cut back on buying cut glass ... but found this two days ago ... it was whispering at me through the glass case ... it kept saying "pssst - get me out of here and turn me over". I did ... it's Hawkes ... there are some dings in the sterling ... but I think they just reflect all the 'mahvalous', boozy cocktail hours it helped enhance.

This is the 14K and opal pin I found while the site was having issues. Got it at a costume price because the 14K mark was hard to find (even with a loupe) on the end of the actual pin part. The stones didn't photograph well ... they're more greeny/blue.

This bunch of old (1910 - 1920's) Valentine cards were found last summer in an estate sale attic ... then forgotten about until they were 'unearthed' a couple of days ago while I was storing Christmas stuff away.

Do you think it's too late to list these Valentines for sale ... if I do it in the next few days? Not sure for how long they'll be 'lost' if I stash them away again!

The bowl with the spider is interesting both aesthetically and historically. I have been researching the potter and have found that he was one of the original Mata Ortiz potters and probably taught the more famous Juan Quezada as well as many of the other potters in the village. Juan Quezada went on to develop some of the polychrome techniques used by the village and was no doubt very talented but was not entirely responsible for the village pottery renaissance as was originally told.

As is typical is such incidents, proximity, promotion, and jealousies led to fame for one but not the other. New research is showing that a small group of potters initially worked together to create the pottery business in Mata Ortiz. Turns out, some of them lived on the wrong side of the arroyo and were initially overlooked by the American promoters that came down to buy pottery.

An interesting side note to all this is that the whole pottery industry down there grew somewhat out of the crackdown on selling antique tomb raided pots. Many in the village participated in the sale and smuggling of old pots. When this became too dangerous, they began making reproductions and sold them to the Americans who were often unaware of their provenance. These pots eventually became recognized for the works of art that they are and, as they say, the rest is history.

I bought a large box of silverplate today for $25

I figured there had to be a piece or two of sterling or maybe something cool
    0109 spoon 001.jpg
I found some nice trinkets in the bottom
Most of the spoon are marked '92 or thereabouts

Those spoons and so on would go in the day to day cutlery drawer, to use instead of the solid service we use when dining instead of just eating. Nothing like a bit of variety and they are cheaper than utility cutlery.

Terry5732, re last photo (spoons) -- bottom row, one in from the right side of the monitor screen -- looks like a small serving(?) spoon or maybe a sugar(?) spoon. Bowl of the spoon has Christmas-type greenery(?) in it, a twisted handle ending in what "looks like" a feather, and a scalloped finish to the end of the bowl --

What do you think that particular spoon is for and is anything (maker, more design(s)) on the back of the spoon?

Just curious. I really like that spoon.

The spoons are mostly sterling souvenir from the '90s. The shovel is engraved on the back 'Chicago mech 94'. The mark is just 925 over sterling over 1000.

The spoon with Winona in the bowl is Old Colonial by Towle. Sterling of course.

    Nice haul, Terry!

I'm thinking I see a couple or three of 19th C. coin spoons in there as well.
