    It also could have been those little cigars as maybe they would have been a more luxurious gift than cigarettes.

    John McCains handwriting is available online. Not too many seem to be Senators.

    I'd feel a bit like a stalker if I followed that line. And you never know what this senator was an admirer of. :O

    I sincerely doubt that an actual US Senator would just sign "Senator" and nothing else. The giver was much more likely to have been someone whose nickname was Senator - as a joke.

    It could have been from a naval aviator - Senator might have been a call sign that stuck. Fighter pilots all have call signs or nicknames. It could also just be a nickname.
