Artist identification

  1. Dear Friends,

I recently acquired a rather beautiful oil on canvas portrait. The seller knew nothing about it but I believe it to be Regency, perhaps c. 1810 - 1820? If anyone can take a look and recognise an artist - or indeed sitter! - I should be most fascinated. Dimensions are: 73 x 88 cm Many thanks, [IMG][IMG][IMG] Joshua

Did you do a Google Image search, Joshua, to see if it's a copy? That's always the first thing to do. Unlikely anyone will be able to identify artist without a signature but... It would be helpful if you told us more about it. What continent did you find it on? Where did you acquire it? What were you told about it?

As to date, late 1820s into the 1830s, I'd think. Lower waist line, fashionable leg-of-mutton sleeve with sheer fabric over a solid puff, and fuller skirt. A period of transition between Regency (or Empire) and Romantic era fashion.
