Hope the person hand-walking the chain is going toward the left, or they’ll soon get an unpleasant surprise.

(When I have nothing useful to contribute I still post gratuitous BS, sry, can’t help it.)

Are there any children's fairy tales with distressed sailors in a boat? How big is the button. Maybe there are other buttons showing scenes from other fairy tales. This just seems so bizarre to be military.

I was wondering about the flag on the left. Is it possibly not a lion? This is Inti, the Incan sun God. I believe the Incans and Peruvians have an interrelated history. Maybe also look at tapestries done by both to find a similar scene. Maybe someone can fact check.

That is a representation of Viracocha, Tiwanaku (Tiahuanaco) culture. Viracocha was the creator God, who also created the sun, so older than the sun. Tiwanaku culture was centred on the shores of Lake Titicaca and much older than the Inca culture.

This is a representation of Inti, the Inca sun God:

The Inca culture started in Peru, and spread to Ecuador and Bolivia, so Inca history is Peruvian history. Peruvian schoolchildren are taught the names and feats of all Inca kings.

I don't really see a likeness. I think the man in the crow's nest is giving his magic carpet a good shake, so it is ready for a quick getaway.;)

I swear I saw this image a long time ago on something - maybe on the old Ebay board. I don't think it was from the Americas.

Happened on the local button club meeting today and showed them the photo, they said it is the "Ship of Despair" which is in one of the large button books.

    It certainly shows despair.
Did they know what the "Ship of Despair" referred to, or where it originated?

The woman who recognized the button said she bought it 40 years ago for $12 and it is one of the large button books. She really didn't know the history of the subject.

@Huntingtreasure, I threw out lion, because that was my first impression.....but it could also be a male ruler, or even some kind of a God too!!!!! I also looked at it upside down, but there wasn't as clear a face that way.......to me.......just my thoughts....

It’s a very difficult image to make heads or tails of! It could be a hamburger for all I know. :banghead:

For whatever it's worth - I'm not seeing a face on the flag - the suggestion of one ...perhaps. I try to keep in mind that the human brain looks to make sense of disorder - so it tends to pick out patterns that look familiar and interpret them in a way that it is used to. To me I just can't see anything at all that makes sense on that flag...if it's a flag, I guess it is :)

Here is something on Peter Flötner:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Flötner

I haven't found the ship yet, but in 16th century art a ship often aluded to the 'mothership of the church'. Peter Flötner could have been one of many artists who made critical art during that time of religious upheaval in Europe.
