Is this a Chinese pottery box?

Found this charming hand-painted pottery box at a thrift store. I'm guessing it's at least vintage (40-80 years old) possibly older. It is crazed, has some pitting and is unsigned. For some reason this looks Chinese to me. So far I've spent about two hours online and have found a few Chinese pieces with similar colors and styles, but nothing definite. Will likely head to my library next to do more research but wanted to share it here too.

Any ideas as to origin and age??

IME, that crazing is typical of recent Chinese imports.

    Pretty box, but not antique.
Looks inspired by antique Swatow ware.

Yes, I was thinking not Chinese in form or decoration. I have a similar box that Chitong (old members will remember him) told me mind was from the 1400s IIRC.

I looked up the little note I put inside: Thai lidded box, Sawankhalok or Sawanhalok, c. 14th c.

This is by no means Sawankhalok, my mother had a collection of real Sawankhalok and Sukhothai ceramics.

    Sawankhalok:

    Not Sukhothai either:

That is Sawankhalok, beautiful. If yours is the same, it could be Sawankhalok too. They already had mass production in Sawankhalok, and most boxes have lids which are no exact match. You can see that in the one that looks like yours. It was probably that way from the start.
Karen's lidded box is very different, only the generic Asian lidded box shape is related. But that is a very common shape in Asian ceramics, and not an indication of age or region.

Gorgeous. I think this is another example of a mismatched lid, it is part of Sawankhalok ceramics history and that very early mass production. To me it is one of the charms of Sawankhalok.

It was an eBay purchase I made many years ago. It was obviously described incorrectly, but I thought it was an interesting piece and might be Indian. I was flabbergasted when Chitong told me what it was and how old. I think I paid less than $20 for it. :shame:
