Another piece that came down through the family. I think it dates to the 1920s or '30s. Stands 4 1/2" high and has a brown glaze that looks to me the same as you'd find on electrical insulators. (Thought there might be a clue in that.) No maker's mark of course.

    Hi,
I usually call that glaze an Albany glaze which is found on the insides of stonewear crocks.

    That's something I didn't know. Thanks.

I'd call it as treacle glaze. I can't see any art deco aspects to the figure.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It's a cute little owl; would make a good mascot. :)

    Did they make ceramic mascots?

    Sure, why not?

Are you talking about car mascots? Would ceramic be sufficiently durable?

I mean something broader... a definition of mascot that I just found online describes what I mean:
"a person or thing that is supposed to bring good luck or that is used to symbolize a particular event or organization."

    What is a car mascot?

Never mind, I figured out it is what I would call a hood ornament.

Hood ornament. So I guess not.

Sorry, I edited my post... :cat: -- I don't see an owl emoticon in the list here.

Do you think it's too small for a newel post? That was my first thought.

Yeah, I would say too small. But it does look like it might be a topper off something. Maybe a clock?

Hull Pottery made an owl with a similar glaze, but doesn't look like this one. This one is much nicer.
