OK I found this a while ago and came across it again today/ I believe it's African? except the lizard handle makes me think I'm wrong & it's probably Mexican?
Also how would I describe it to a stranger: carved box with animal top/handle?
It's beautiful wood + I love those little feet they carved into the wood!
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Some ads called it a basket box, but maybe @Taupou knows another term.

    Love the box, Journey.
Great hunting again, Hunting. Yes, it is Lombok, probably from Rungkang Jangkuk.
The basketry part is rattan. Lizards and frogs are popular motifs on Lombok, I have a box with both.
Lombok crafts are often sold as Balinese.
(After all, everything Indonesian is Balinese. The other islands are just there to make up the numbers.;))

Thanks - mine seems to have more wood than rattan while others I've found are mostly weaved rattan?

They do both, there is no real significance to that. Maybe one family prefers to use more wood and another more rattan.

Thousands of styles of these are made on Lombok; as others say, there is no real significance. The top may be flat, carved, pierced, or painted; giraffe, hippo, frog, fish. You can see a selection by searching for "Lombok basket."
The key identifier is the pierced wood on top and bottom. In many examples, the bottom piece will be a small disc or flat plate and the top similarly attached to the rattan.
They are often mistaken for baskets from other cultures, and you'll see them on ebay as Eskimo, Aleut, Northwest Coast; Makah.....I've seen them listed as "baleen basket."
There are specific differences in the weaving techniques used by all these cultures; but those differences are not obvious without some study.

my best Lombok basket.....bought as such....sold as such.....all the while fending off critics saying the carving was NW Coast native......!
