I think someone just made the images in this framed piece by pressing colored sand down into the frame with some thin tool maybe? Remember seeing an antique sand art piece in a bottle, this was on an episode of Antiques Roadshow, if this was made in a similar way, no idea. When I google "sand art", too many of the wrong kind of match -- beach scenes, or that framed motion sand. What do you call this?

Meant to get a side shot, but the frame itself is about an inch thick, double glass with sand in between, and you can see through the picture on both sides. Measures approx 8" x 5".

Anything you can tell me, much appreciated!

Thanks for taking a look. :)

I could be wrong, but I think the "Dynamic sand" pictures are the ones where the sand is actually moving in the frame, making a new pattern each time. Do I have that right?

This one does not move. It is just set to be in this permanent scene with the moon, mountain, sea, etc.

(Now notice that it looks like it has two moons -- one is a reflection, lol.)

Thanks for the help with the name, too. That is also what I came up with.

Just didn't know how hard something like this would be to make. DH suggested it looked like a "kit", I didn't think so. However, open to being corrected on that.

Keep the suggestions coming. Much appreciated.

I lucked out finding that -- was searching Youtube for the Antiques Roadshow Andrew Clemens clip and on the same page as suggested videos were two from David Alcala. Bingo! That's the name! :)

And for fun, here is the Andrew Clemens Sand Art appraisal. What a work of art!

    I don't think M would be David

Oh, good point, Terry! I was just looking at the last name and was thinking I had a match-- maybe son? daughter?

    Back to the drawing board!

Now thinking that maybe that bit on the back was not meant to be the artist's signature, neither of the two sold on Ebay had a magic marker name on the back. Thinking the signature has to be a relative or something, dedication or maybe just making a note of where/when. Too much of a coincidence with the same last name.

So maybe is a David Alcala ? Or maybe a relative who tried making one with his help? Seems like he did teach classes. Further research probably needed. Thanks!

You could call it Alcala sand tapestry, which it is. Just not David, but M.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Hm, I visited Kauai in 2002 ... seeing the marker writing reminded me of that. I didn't see anything like this, though. Thanks for the memory!

Went on a tour of three islands. Kauai was my favorite of the ones I visited.
