Hi - this was in my grandmother's possessions - a brooch - they were well travelled in their youth (he worked in Dutch East Indies)- does anyone know if this is just a tourist trinket, or something older? or where it might be from?

Welcome Nic. It is an Egyptian Revival brooch, and is most likely made in Europe in the 1920s. It could be French.
Egyptian Revival is a recurring fashion, and there was a major Revival after the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. Your grandmother's brooch would have been made because of the revived interest, and she would have looked very fashionable at the time.

Thank you very much - do you think it has any value, or one to pass on to the charity shop with some other things?

It is collectible, but I have no idea of the value, sorry. I will tag some other people who may be able to find something similar so you can get an idea of the value, @i need help , @Ownedbybear .

Yes, and yes.:) My guess is 1920s French, based on the type of decoration and the off-white colour of the enamel.

I can understand why you want to know if it has any value. The values of our items is always comforting to know, but in reality an items true worth is only what a person is prepared to pay for it. There are countless items being offered for sale and listed at ridiculously high prices. Many of these items will never sell, and have been listed for years on end, and even when reduced in price by 50% they're still not worth their price tag.

The above is only a thought and is not aimed at You personally.

Fashions & trends also come-and-go, and the amount we paid for an item 20 years ago doesn't mean jack in terms of profit or an increase in value for certain items. Some things go UP in value and can shoot through the roof and others fall well below what we paid.
