I wasn't sure where to post this request -
cast iron bottle opener, 8 1/2" in length - reproduction? Lady with arms over her head which is the opener, would her feet be another opener? I can find lots of lady bottle openers but none with this other opener/bit at the bottom.
Red rust, which if I recall correctly (from another cast iron piece I had) means it is new and had been aged.
    any thoughts or help appreciated.

Sure looks like an excavated object. I doubt anyone would corrode one intentionally like that, sure doesn't help the marketability IMO. I can't see anything that says "repro." It could be that not many were made, because the opener part, with the two arms, looks kinda weak to me. I'd keep checking, could be something rare although due to the condition, don't quit your day job just yet.

I cannot help but think the bottom part looks like a chisel - perhaps for opening something else? This is a very odd piece that looks handmade.

It looks as though it may have gone through a flood rather than an excavation.

Have you ever noticed how archeologists are never at a loss to explain a mystery object, all else failing it becomes a ritual or religious object.

is in fact a satire on Ug's very fat third wife, made by Og to pass around the boys for a good laugh while they chugged the fermented mammoth milk.

Following the hallowed methodology, it can be stated that the mystery object is clearly a votive figure of the Kegger people of Lower Uberwald, and represents Schlitzi, goddess of beer and stomach upsets. In her raised arms Schlitzi holds the partiate symbol sacred to Morboose, and the crooked bottom of the figure refers to her secondary aspect, with reference to inadvisable curries.

Good find persona - a stove lid-lifter! This one may have had a dual purpose of lid-lifter and bottle opener. Here's another one on etsy.com.

I had looked around on a couple of bottle opener websites I had bookmarked seeing other lady openers including mermaids, but none like this one. Here are a couple of the bottle opener sites.

    Hi Mary,
Just a clarification about the rust. Red rust just means the rust is new. If you take a piece of iron 100 years old and has never been near water or humidity it will rust with a red or orange rust. If the object is old and has rusted it becomes black. So really black rust means old but red rust is new. An old item if it gets damaged can have red rust. Usually a new item that has rust trying to look old has red rust not black.

Greg, I don't quite understand what you mean above?

I saw a LOT of non-antique tools rusted shortly after flooding and they rusted orange to red.

Mary, I didn't realize that the bottom portion your first photo of the chisel looking end was what your 2nd photo was showing from the side. Sorry. I would agree with Persona-non-gratin.

    Hi,
What I said was that newly rusted items either new or old will have red/orange rust. If things have black rust thay are old.
