Featured Hunting in the hoard, opinions on a ring please....

I think this is one for @Any Jewelry maybe, but as ever, all opinion is very welcome.

I bought this about ten years ago for fifty pence in a charity shop. Had a stare at it again and thought, again, that it's actually quite well done. The stones - might be turquoise - are properly set. The brushed gold is well done, so is the beaded edge. No sign of wear, or plating and it's not magnetic. It's like some UAE jewellery I have, much of which is made in India.

 

Is it me, or does that ring have a punch mark on the outside? Unless it's a mark because they whaled on it from the inside. I'd have a jeweler test it because that thing makes my nose twitch. Those turquoises look "right" too.

 

It's a sort of mark, but I can't work out whether it's an accident or what. It makes my nose twitch too, it's got the feel of high carat gold. I'm very fond of it.

 

That doesn't look accidental to me. If I'd been at that sale it would have left on my finger too.

if it's turquoise, it's Afghan or Persian from the colour.

 

That's what I was thinking too. Well worth the fifty pence.

Yeah well. Playing jewelry sure beats lottery tickets! The odds are better.

 

Interesting way of keeping the stones in place............but i can see it snagging on any fabric.........so a ring for summer only !!

 

It doesn't actually catch, surprising as that may sound.

 

with those raw edges .......it will.......sooner or later !

Smells solid gold at least 14k, and Persian turquoises.
This textured gold finish reminds me of Italian Florentine pieces...
The stone setting method is rather basic but efficient.

Two questions-
1)Do you think the turquoise are the original stones or have they replaced deeper ones and someone resourceful used the original settings in an unconventional way?
2)I’m happy to take on the risk and offer you the chance to double your money. So that’s £1? PayPal ok or would you prefer bank transfer?

 

Twisted wire edge,wire brush texture,small stones may be replacements being set in the tall bezels.

 

that might explain the holes cut into the ring.....

 

There's no sign of them being replaced, they fit the settings pretty well. As I said, I've UAE stuff with those open backs like that. Seems to be a Thing.

I've seen open-backed opaque stones early and often on precious metal items from all over. It depends on local preference, jeweler training, and practicality.

 

It does indeed. The charity shop I bought this in is in my very local very mixed part of London. A fair few Indian jewellers and Middle Eastern, too.

The stone set is interesting: it's as though someone popped the stone in, then snipped the edge and twisted it, almost. Pretty secure.
