My wife got this old table from her 90yr old aunt and she wanted to paint it. I told her it’s kind of cool the way it is and might be worth something.

I guess what I’m asking is how old is it and is it worth anything...thanks in advance! 036DC7A5-5124-4A82-B3A9-67D990B05543.jpeg

1970s side table. I see a split in the top. Does it open or has it just separated?

It's not an antique yet. It is a nice functional piece, but no major value. It actually doesn't look that bad in the color it is now. Finish appears in good shape with no gouges or major scratches.

Anytime you paint something you alter the character of the original piece.

1970s it may still be real wood.

Particle board started to show up end of 70s, early 80s. Stapled together. If that is the construction, painting it isn't going to ruin anything.

    BTW -
    Welcome to the board.

Thanks for the quick responses and warm welcome. It does expand on the top and it’s definitely real wood but I will regretfully inform her that she can paint it if she wants

It might look great after painting - if one is going to paint furniture, these types of pieces are good candidates. Years ago my mom asked me to find furniture for her to paint. I asked her why on Earth do you want to do that ? Well, the results were surprising - she did it right - surface prep, painting, stenciling. I guess I should have known better then to question my mom !

Paint can be spectacular on furniture if done correctly and by someone that knows what they are doing.
