Thumbelina tiles.JPG Thumbelina signature.JPG Thumbelina 2nd signature.JPG There are 3 of these tiles. Again 1880's or thereabouts in date. Wonderfully decorated over glaze, all scenes from Thumbelina and a bit creepy, signed and dated MS 1886 or 1856 but i can't see it being that early so i'm pretty sure it's 1886. Really well painted and very rare and precious things. They are 6" tiles. John Moyr Smith is perhaps the most famous tile decorator/designer but he normally signs his name or JMS but he did do this kind of subject. Again i can't find any more information on these so if anybody out there could point me in the right direction i would be very grateful.

    Welcome to Antiquers Simon!

    Charming tiles.

If you edit your post, you can change your photos to Full Image.

I would change them for you, but I'm unsure just how to do that.

Do they not enlarge when you click on them? I'll try and edit it. Thanks Judy

If you can still use the edit button, you will have a choice of button or Full Image.

If you're not successful, there are others here that are capable of doing it for you.

Many members view this forum on their phones, in which case one must tap on each photo and it will open a new window for each one and you have to tap/swipe back and forth between multiple windows to view the item in question. It's much easier to have full-size photos embedded in the post itself.

Welcome! (Sorry, I've no info to offer on your lovely tiles.)

Greetings. Looks to me like the work of Arthur Rackham. He did illustrate a Thumbelina.

He did indeed and it has his scratchy fantastical style but they aren't good enough for Rackham plus it doesn't explain the MS initials, unless they aren't initials and refer to something else

These are sweet! I couldn't find any illustrator that matched in the one book that I have. It's a pitiful reference though.

Thumbelina is one of my favourite fairy tales. Not Rackham, I think, but doesn’t look like Moyr Smith either. Lovely tiles. I’ll rummage around and see if I can find anything, but my search skills aren’t that great.

Can you post a pic of the back of one of the tiles?

A thought - if you are on Facebook there is a group called The Golden Age of Illustration. It is a public group that is easy to join and the folks are all pretty nice.
It is possible (although maybe not likely) that someone there will know who the artist might be.
