Featured Silver Porringer

Hi there - I am looking for a date of this porringer. I was able to identify the maker as John Henry Rawlings, but looking for date and approx. value. Thank you in advance for your help.

Not at all unusual to find the same or extremely similar classic designs by different silver manufacturers...

It has been etched with initials so it was obviously presented to someone. Does that devalue the item?

 

Entirely possible, some buyers don't like engraved personalizations on silver without significant age, especially if rather specific or unattractive, though there are exceptions, like trophies or famous names, etc. For my part, see little point in further generic discussion - perhaps you could post images of your item?

I think that's not a bad fitting lid but the stand or saucer for the loving cup.

 

Carter's calls it a "matching lid/under tray".

 

My only question is "since when and in what culture does a lid have legs that stick up in the air?"

It is a cover that also serves as a dish/underplate, not particularly uncommon, they can also be found with a low pedestal on the cover, or even a flat surface, similar can also be found on shallow porringers. There is probably an 18th century original of this particular design in a museum somewhere, the reason it was reproduced by so many makers (several examples can be found online) - I'm not feeling well today, and frankly don't feel like pulling out the books I have here, but might poke around the internet later for some examples of others with dual purpose covers...

Eh, had allergies all my life, was working in a storage shed, something set me off, had worst attack in years - marathon sneezing and coughing, massive sinus headache, post nasal drip nausea, just settled in with drugs and ginger ale, and crashed.
