Featured French(?) pair of cherubic wall plaques.

They have the number 53 as well as a “Clef” mark underneath which
seems to have been used by a lot of French makers as well as others
and is confusing me. The back of these looks like it was made yesterday
but the front is very old school porcelain with tiny fragile flowers and leaves.
Clearly nobody has dropped them or even rough handled them as they
are in gob smacking perfect condition with not a hint of a break or chip.
Can anyone point me to a maker and possible date?

How large (or small) are they?? Those pins holding them don't look like they could hold a LOT of weight............

I would be curious about the holes as if they were applied to something specific. Just wondering.

 

I'm more inclined to German than French.
Early to mid 1900s.
Only a guess.

 

The construction has me a bit confused. There must have been decorative nails or screws that fit into those holes to hold the plaques flat against the wall. They probably were not meant to be removed once hung which would explain the lack of manufacturer marks on the back. I think what we are seeing on the back are decorator codes rather than manufacturer marks. Really neat pieces.

Oh, hadn't thought of that. There were a lot of bisque and porcelain pieces like this mounted on velvet and framed. Mid 1900s.

oops missed the data - 18cm x 13cm and 0.27kg / 0.29kg

 

I can't find any wear or marks in the holes and one has a grape in front of it preventing its use as a fixing hole. The hanger is quite strong and more than capable of holding them against the wall.

 

Nice; I really like that they are a matched set without being identical or symmetrical.
