It is a lion. Very nice box, John.
A manticore has a human head, by the way.

I think you were refering to the wooden statue at the beginning of this thread, right? I thought it might be a lions head too (after the remarks earlier here). Especially because of the nose.

I get an error, each time i try to open attachement.

  5. indeed, it does have some reminiscent qualities of the manticore, lion, horns, wings.

Could just be someones imagined creature too.

    Stylized , you must mean...
At that level of craftsmanship, I highly doubt it's the 1st one the carver ever made, and doubt even more that it's just a fantasy item, with no real connection to some myth or legend !

  7. Yes stylized! clearly its not a Manticore as they have scorpion tales as well and look much different. Ive been doing more research, couldnt really find anything close to it. all the bali stuff had like huge teeth sticking outwards and looked more viscious.

Its almost like a winged goat or something, has the clefted lips..IDK

But it has paws, no hoofs :)

to me, it's hard to say those are paws.....

  10. I dont think those are paws. These are more squared in the front and are thinner and hooflife in my humble opinion.

The front feet seem to have 4 toes, facing forward. That's too many for hoofs, I think. Here some close-ups, from above and below IMG_20180315_214018.jpg IMG_20180315_214041.jpg .

Wow, upside feet really similar to your emu (3toed, ostrich 2toed) feet. My statue has 4 toes per front foot (backfoot 3), but most birds apparently have 4 toes as well.
On the other hand (or foot;) 0, still reminds me of paw of a dog for instance. Although they (and other ammals?) mostly have a small 5th toe as well.
So still can be anyting really :):banghead:
