    Chris Mount Getting there

Howdy I read that rolex sold their movements in the 20s and 30s to other companies who put their watch faces on them can anyone confirm that and also does this face look familiar only has a nickel outer but a lever rolex mechanism. One if the small screws is missing i would say that could be replaced. Also are these movements worth anything in this sort of case. 15200656049690.jpg 15200656050231.jpg 15200656050602.jpg 15200661649344.jpg

This is a 'before they were famous' thing. In the early days of Rolex they would supply batches of watches with whatever name the retailer wanted on the dial. Before 'branding' became a thing, buyers would trust a local retailer thay were comfortable with against some name they had never heard of. The watch is a Rolex watch from about 1920, just locally branded.
The winding wheel screw is probably generic, any repairer with a good pile of scrap movements and bits could probably find one to fit.
You can safely sell it as a Rolex, it is not some hybrid creature. The early pocket watches are not as popular as the wrist watches, so they do not fetch such a premium over other brands. The quality is about the same as other 15J Swiss watches of the period, the Rolex brand has always been something of a triumph of marketing over actual premium quality.

    Hi,
A collector friend of mine says "when you look at a Rolex the first thing to look at is the second hand, if it sweeps around then you have to look for more. If it clicks on the seconds toss the fake."

A lot of new Rolex's have a second hand that moves 6 or 8 times a second but I'm not sure the older ones have the same movement. :)

Any watch with a mechanical movement that uses a conventional escapement will have a seconds hand that moves in tiny steps.

It is possible for a quartz watch to replicate this action, it would simply be far more expensive to no real purpose.
