    Puzzling underglaze backstamp.

The plate itself is thickly potted, with abraded chips revealing an off white granular surface.

    Glaze has bluish tinge.

Decoration looks to be oriental pheasants

    Anyone know who made this?

Looks Japanese. And a fan mark, so this fan collector is happy.
One person's pheasant is another person's phoenix, I think.;) They are often interchangeable in East Asian imagery, but the symbolism is different.

    I think I should wear a dunce's hat!

I had checked the Gotheborg list before but didn't drill down to the subsections.

Koransha mark, not sure of date though

Yes, I was thinking late 19th/early 20th. The orchid & fan shape seems to have been used as an impressed mark 19thC but I cant find one in underglaze blue

Think that design is referred to as Rising Phoenix.

I also have never seen the stamped fan mark, only the impressed one. Also the name in your mark is written in Kanji, not in Hiragana as in the impressed one. The company dates the impressed mark to Taisho - early Showa period, and I think yours should date to the same period. https://www.koransha.co.jp/koransha/koransha_mei.html

Thank you, cxgirl, I appreciate that very much. We (Denise and me) do try to buy interesting lots, especially those that we don't understand. How else would we learn? :)

Will be posting some 18th C bits shortly, which look like they should be in SIS's painted in blue book....but don't seem to be :(
