Wowza! What a wonderful lesson in silver! I'd have lost out big time. Although, seeing them in person... I may have made some of the same observations.
    They really ARE beautiful...

I'm not surprised they were Portuguese. The Germans have been known to hide their marks too, but their designs aren't usually quite that over the top for lack of a better term. I wouldn't have been surprised if they turned out to be South American. The folks down there often don't mark things at all, hence the twitching nose, and the designs would have been "to the local taste" in the 50s or 60s at least.

Being a silver novice, that was fun.

I did notice that mark, but was not sure if it was a blemish. I looked closely at the front to see if a matching blemish was visible.

    I did like the thinness.

I did not like the spun and striated patterns on the bottoms.

A tiny clue got me started on a search, observe the circled area:

Thanks to your ....ummm.....edumifacation....on other threads....i took my spy glass to the photo's and saw that mark...which seemed on purpose...rather than another dent !!
I also liked the dull silver color....& noticed little blue color in the crevasses on the top of the trays......leading me to surmise that over time they had been polished....( as u no...no easy feat !!) and cared for....even after being dented ....so someone loved them....enuf that I now saw them as special.
