Why do you believe it dates to the 19th century?

I cannot say with certainty. However, the previous owner was a famous socialite who collected/owned many rare 18th-19th c. pieces which for the most part were passed down from her ancestors. Any help would be appreciated.

It's 20th century from the hardware, and if I were taking a guess I'd say Japanese.

I agree. I suspect 1920s or 30s with the blue bird and ship motif.

Wasn't an expensive thing in its time. Something a child would be given, for instance.

Maybe not. But I would be surprised if it was intended for children due to its paint detail and overall solid construction. Especially, the locking cover and routing detail ..

1950s jewelry box. I agree it looks Made in Japan. I have a very similar one stashed someplace in the attic that belonged to my cousin. I only have it because when we cleaned out her house, I stuffed a lot of loose trinkets in it. If you posted bigger closeups of what you call 'routing detail' it would be better. Your pictures don't enlarge when I click on them.
