The overall body shape, along with the neckline of the corset or camisole that is painted on, make me think female.

Is it possible it is used in the way we would use 'patented'?

Mrs. B, when you say penny doll do you mean like this? ( I've had and sold a few of these, she isn't one of these but not sure what they
    are called so I could be looking wrong ) x x x
These are lightweight, the wood is like balsa or as light in the ones I've had...mine is like a brick

I'd still say male, hair, facial features. These jig dolls were often made very crudely, the majority of them were male and often black. Those were the days when modern sensibilities regarding right and wrong were not a great issue. The majority of these dolls were home-made, a cheap toy to amuse themselves. .. Joy.

She was dressed as a girl when first I had her...got her outfit somewhere. Also had a wig.never considered her being a boy before tbh...I think she's a girl. Has her top painted like a sort of cami top? I always thought her black feet were typical boots and her hands gloves? x x

Could have been used as a play doll over the years, wigged and redressed. Jig dolls were usually male and wore long pants so that one could observe the leg movements and the feet hitting the board .. often tapping away to music.
It doesn't really matter what sex it is, it's an old jigger from the past with condition issues .. he is still a keeper in my eyes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, .. Joy.

Maybe not a door, but it does look like it came from something else.

Yup, that's a penny doll. If yours is heavy, then I'd agree on the jig doll.

I am not convinced he/she was originally a jig doll, certainly became one though at least xx
The ones I have seen previously are generally thinner, and they are supposed to have a pipe in em whereas mine is either pushed into an existing crack, or cracked it itself?
    Anyway I love the ole thing,whatever she/he is :D
    Many thanks everyone <3 x x
