Not sure where to place this~antique wooden doll x

Hello everyone xx
I have had this for years,without finding out anything about her.

She's approx 14 inches. I think possibly the eye, and the pipe thing in the back, have been added later and I also think the hinge is later. The hinge has German writing on it and all I can see is a part word: *ESETZLI* .

Any info would be grateully recieved

My pup is desperate to eat her so I have to keep her out of harm's way!

I have googled on many occasions and can never find out anything certain.

Ohh didnt even occur to me she may be a *he*, hehehe. Though frankly I ( as always ) have no idea what he/she is so could be anything!

Hi! Not sure from what Country, but she's a peg or penny wooden doll. I need to refer to my doll encyclopedia to see if the name on yours is mentioned, but it could be a Dutch name....@Any Jewelry might be of some help, or it could also be German. The body is a little different shape, more rounded and I'm wondering about that silver color hole in her back. I wonder if a pole was inserted to use as a puppet.

Hopefully Christmas Joy can add. In the meantime, I'll check my book(s).

I really don't know very much about these dolls. Never had one, and they are rarely seen around here.

My book isn't where it supposed to be. I think I brought it to the shop and I won't be there til Wed.

The more I look at your photos, I'm wondering if this was an automoton. There's a lot of hardware.

I've only handled one automoton....one that the owner of the shop I'm in had for sale several years ago, and I believe it was made of china.

It is German, as Boudicca thought. We Dutch are too lazy to pronounce tz.
It could be part of the word 'gesetzlich', legal, or according to law. Meaning the metal hinge or the automaton mechanism was made according to regulations, maybe?

She's a penny doll, early 19th C and yes, the eye is added. I bought a really tatty one at a car boot for a couple of quid. It got fought over at auction, made about forty quid. My local auctioneer was amazed. I was rather pleased.

It was the body shape that was giving me pause...she ha a look of a stump doll, I thought,with the legs being possibly added later but penny doll DOES seem a more likely prospect!

Going to lose myself in a rabbit hole in a minute, looking at penny dolls...going to settle down with a MUG of coffee and maybe some choc!

Yes, my first thought was Jig Doll, male .. and possibly home carved with arms and legs added on .. they were popular in their day. He looks to be quite old. .. Joy.

 

That eye makes him look like something from a Tim Burton movie.

 

I think she was definitely made into a jig doll, the hole in the back is for that I think xx but wasn't originally made as one, it's split her back ( the
pipe) or was shoved into an existing crack. I don't think the pipe was there originally x x

 

( I also meant to say I think it could be gESETZLIch...legally or statutory ( wonder if it's from an old door hinge or something?)
