Thrift find today - believe it to be silver. Acts like it. A bit crude but maybe NA? Mexican? Class project? There is what I think is a mark on the back, maybe a rose?

Not NA. Beyond that I'd be taking a wild guess. If I were to go straight for the WAG I'd say Horn of Africa somewhere.

Think I have seen rings that were like this or similar that were meant to be worn at the end of the finger like a big, long, pointy fingernail.

It is a Shaheed ring, probably from Oman. Shaheed means to bear witness.
It is worn on the index finger, the finger raised when a Muslim recites the Shahadah to testify that there is only one God and Muhammad is his messenger.
This one is probably (nomadic) Bedouin made. Nowadays Omani women mostly wear gold Shaheeds.

Great site, thank you, very useful to me, I have some Omani silver with gold jewellery. And it has more information on a princess whose picture appears in so many books on Middle Eastern jewellery. I always call her the girl with the smallest feet in the world:

I never knew she was known in the Netherlands in the 19th century. An amazing life:

Now I'm off to find a copy of her memoirs......

It is pretty unique, and has a story. I have a dainty enameled silver Shaheed, never found a heavier one like yours. If you ever decide to sell it, just let me know.:)
