    Hello fellow antiquers,
    I am thrilled to find this community of curious souls. I am an amateur art collector. I love all that is art or interesting. I don’t have a favorite. Researching a piece is the best part. I hope I can offer assistance and learn.

    How fun!

    I have a beautiful painting hanging in my living room with a fun story behind it.

    My grandfather fought in France in WWI, and family lore said that he befriended a farmer during that time. Later, in the 20s, he returned to France on a trip and met the same farmer who gifted him the painting in gratitude.

    Great story!

    I put a photo of the painting on-line, with the artist's name, hoping to learn more about it. Eventually, I was contacted by a descendant of the artist who was writing a book.

    Turns out none of the story was true, and my grandfather bought the painting at an exhibit of the artist's work in Ohio.

    A professional photographer was sent to my home to photograph the painting, which now appears in the book!

    As a small child, I would go up close and it would all be a blur as impressionist paintings are up close. But then I would turn around, walk away, turn back around and it looked like a photograph from far enough away.

    I am still amazed to this day how an artist can paint something so crudely, working up close, and know how real it will look from a distance.

    Lots of family stories are just that, but the research sure is fun.

    :hilarious: Sorry about the destruction of the family story, but thanks for revealing it here. We get lots of queries trying to confirm family legends that, like yours, turn out to be false. But this is a great example because it has the whole tale, beginning to unfortunate end.

    Can't complain. He did serve in France in the war, and he probably did meet the artist at his exhibit in Ohio. And the painting ended up in a book, and in my home!
