I found this in a friend's warehouse where he stores art & antiques, etc that he sells at local shows. He asked me if I knew what it was and I told him no, but I knew where to find out - so here I am!
He thinks it's old - like 1800's old because of the plaque in it. I'm not sure.
    What is this?
    How old is it?
    Thanks for any help.

It's a portable shrine to the Crucifixion, nothing voodoo. All of the objecs have Catholic significance to the Passion Last Supper and death of Christ. Cock crowing, the skull and crossbones for His death, sponge on a pole for the compassionate soldier, that sort of thing. The plaque looks like transferware china. 19th C, as the date suggests.

You pray to it, you get 100 days off your sentence in Purgatory.

I agree, not Santeria. Although Santeria is not the same as Voodoo.
Many Santeria shrines look like 'regular' Roman Catholic shrines, in spite of the Yoruba ties. But the text is in English, a Cuban shrine would have a Spanish text.
A real bonus, that you get 100 days indulgence each time.;)

Probably you have to say 100 'Our Father's (Lord's Prayer), not just the line Thy Kingdom Come. Would this have come from a church? It seems very prescriptive for home decor.

It is a home shrine. Roman Catholicism was hard work in those days.;)

Santeria has a thing for candles. Their artifacts will most often have candle wax residue.

They wouldn't be able to burn candles behind the glass. But the style is different from Santeria anyway.

That's just good old 19th century Catholic. Those pieces turn up a lot here in the New York to Boston corridor.

No, the 100 refers to the number of days indulgence, not the number of times you have to pray. Time deducted from Purgatory after you snuff it.

Holy Cow, would you believe I actually own one of these? I have it in my pile of things to research. The items in the shadowbox are termed Arma Christi(Weapons of Christ) check it out on Wikipedia. The ones I have seen vary slightly, the "Thy Kingdom Come" sign is not in all of them. I could not find any info as to what makes the date significant. (Pope Pius IX did celebrate the 50th anniversary of his episcopal consecration in June 1877.) Some have the items in silver color, some are mixed silver and gold. The only one in the solds on Ebay($105) looks absolutely in new condition or recently rehabbed http://tiny.cc/n8xxqy (weird frame)
Prices FOR sale vary wildly....$750, 250, 280, 699, 94, 2980! So very interesting to me. Still have not found any info on a maker. One on Ebay says it's German, another claims made in Italy. Mine has no marks, it belonged to my nana-in-law who grew up Catholic, but was not practicing in her adult life. It did hang in her bedroom but was probably found in the trash or given to her because someone was getting rid of it. Also the background scene is paper.
    Sorry so long. Marianne
