IMG_7757.jpg IMG_7759.jpg If only I'd find the knife that goes with. It's about 6" long. Found in the same box of stuff as the bird book and postcard album.

I'm thinking my Uncle picked it up when he got the Syrian long rifle. Similar design on the metal. So much was stolen when my cousin started developing dementia and the family didn't know. She left her doors unlocked and let anyone and everyone come in. She thought they were 'helping' her and they helped themselves to 80% of the family antiques.

In this case, maybe they were helping, by removing a big knife out of the way.

Oh, she had plenty of knives around! I got her father's buck knife and several pocket knives and various work knives like a pruner. I also got a German bayonet.

Think I'm required to say here, I get the point. Good thing she seems to have been forgetful but not aggressive.

Oh, no. She thought everyone was as giving as she was. My mother couldn't always take care of me so I had to live with various family members and sometimes sent to live with strangers. Sylvia was more like a big sister than a cousin. She was 8 years older. She developed early onset dementia and because she lived out in the woods and didn't always keep in touch, we didn't realize how bad it had gotten. I have to say, the Hillsborough County Nursing Home in Goffstown, NH is an excellent facility. They took really good care of her for ten years until she died from a congenital heart problem.

The sheath appears to be for a Finnish puukko, or knife.

On one hand, I could say all the good stuff from my cousin's house is gone. On the other hand, every time I open a box I'm surprised at what I find. I'd never have guessed Finnish.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

If the knife looked anything like what's shown, and the cousin was letting anyone and everyone in, you can probably bet your bottom dollar......the knife is gone......sadly. And I'm sorry to read that it sounds like you and your cousin had a rough time of it growing up too, Bev. :(

This, at least, was a mercy. Also, it sounds likes she was happy in her own way, & that was too.

I hope you find more interesting stuff in those boxes....before you Finnish !! :playful::playful:

Oh.....I'd wager there are lots of Puukko knife owners out there who could use a good vintage sheath !!!

    :p

These are the types of things that go directly into my son's display cabinet. ;). None of the interesting stuff ever gets sold around here.

Maybe I'll sneak up and take a photo of his cabinet one of these days. He's lifted all the really neat stuff from my house. ;). We tend to be rather Victorian in our displays. Antiques interspersed with birds nests and animal skulls that my grandson brings in from the woods.
