This was at the thrift, just a small framed piece without measuring it 4x6" or so.

It had such a primitive look, frame is older. Just sort of quaint and or steampunky. A young girl's sewing effort?

The frame looks to be 1940's or earlier, is this cross stitch? I am utterly dysfunctional when it comes to needlework terms. Also as the close up in photo four shows, would this have been a pattern that was purchased, or did someone actually draw the X's on a piece of fabric?

Curious what you can tell me!

    Thanks.

It's cross stitch. You can see the pattern underneath printed in blue.

That primitive style of cross stitch could have been done at any time (even last week, LOL) but, from the look of the framing, I'll hazard a guess at 1930s-50s-ish but, hopefully, others here who know better will chime in. :)

The fabric panel would have been purchased pre-printed with the blue x's.

    Thanks D & B, :)

It is such a simple pattern -- would have been for a child to practice one?

It is a simple pattern. Could have been practice for a young girl. (Sure you don't want to take it apart but needlepoint expertise easier to evaluate from the reverse side.) And I agree with dates above.

It's very possibly quite newly framed -- the fact that it's under glass and is quite badly cropped. It's very charming, but I'd bet it was later. Needleworks that I have and have done haven't aged this well, not even when carefully framed and looked after. This one looks very clean to be too old, I think. No dust, discolouration of the fabric. But it is rather quaint.

Good point about the fabric. It has zero discoloration, you are right about that.

Was thinking the whole thing was older mostly because of the frame. The frame has been stained black, nailed at the corners, angled nails holding the back in seems to be an style I associate with the 40's/50's and earlier, but who knows. It has sort of a primitive quaint look, what caught my eye about it.

Thanks for taking a look! :)

I'd say 1950s. I had these to learn on.
