Since you apparently know little about Ukraine you might be interested to see this small but impressive monument to the victims of Holodomor (Great Famine) of 1932-33. About 7-8 million (the number is still not known) were starved to death in Ukraine by Stalin. The monument is located in front of St. Michael's cathedral. It was unveiled in 1993. Yesterday I was walking by and could not help taking a photo.

My grandparents came to the USA during that time frame possibly from Ukraine and started a new life here.
    :)

Edited to add, my grandparents came a few years before that time frame.
Oy, I was having a senior moment.

I get the New York Times and they run frequent articles regarding the Ukraine. Besides the tragedy, though, one gets the feeling of hope. The Ukraine has been an independent country for such a short time. I hope your country becomes free of foreign influences soon so that your people can be free to develop based on your own strong traditions.

Thank you for the link, Natasha. I may have told you previously that I have a friend who married a lady from the Ukraine that he met on-line. She is a lovely person and they have a very happy union. One of the gifts she has given me is this set of nesting dolls. I thought you might like to see it. The workmanship is so fine that you cannot even see the where the two halves separate. I apologize for the glare.

    Hi,
When I was growing up an elderly lady always asked me to help her do her Easter eggs. She decorated them with a tiny pipe filled with melted bees wax and keep dying them different colors. Hers were spectacular. Mine were really bad but she always asked me to help and over a couple of years I became a little better. I know now she was a Ukrainian. I just knew her as Bubba.
