14k Gold Shell? Input on how to save ring?

Found this in a gold scrap box, got it for free. However, I had never heard of the term GOLD SHELL before? I assume it's another term for gold filled? The ring itself is pretty but the setting is somewhat beat. I assume it's victorian? Anyhow my jeweler is offering to set a glass stone for $15? They would glue the stone in and fix the prongs so they aren't catching on anything. I am never a big advocate for glue but they told me it's the only thing I can do because you can't really fix gold filled prongs?

looks like....1/20th....that's gold plated...and not worth putting a stone of any kind back into it............in my opinion.....

Yea, maybe not. I just hate to scrap an old piece like this but oh well it's too far gone.

1/20th is gold filled/gold shell which amounts to over 100 times more gold in the ring than plating by weight.

Oh , thank you for pointing that out.....I'm made a mistake calling it plated.
I sure won't make that mistake ever again..............:(

If you are keeping it, $15. is cheap to put a glass stone in and make it wearable.
    It's a pretty setting.

Agree with cluttered. And glue is the only way, in this case.

Spartcom hates to scrap it, that's why cluttered said "if you are keeping it", and why I agreed.
And if he wants to wear it, just a bit of clear nail varnish or micro-crystaline varnish on the inside, and no green fingers.:)

Wearing this ring cant be any worse than when I wear my ancient Roman ring that does turn my finger green. It washes off so it's all good lol.

Yep, no harm! Enjoy it (and the hunt for a convenient stone! I'd love a turquoise!):)
