Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Yes, I think it might be. It might also be PPI.

The scanner I'm currently using is part of an All-In-One printer and the workings of it were made very simple, for people like me who have not learned in great detail how to do good scans. When I'm scanning I just have about 4 options for the resolution, and I can arrow through those. I always select the option with the highest resolution.

I haven't been extremely satisfied with this printer, so may be using a new one soon. The scanning is fairly good, but I don't like some of the printing functions.

I'll have to try it out. I also have one of the 3 in 1 printer scanners. Not sure what the thing is capable of. Guess I'll have to play around some more with it. :)

While no question that is a vein, I think it may pale in comparison to this fellow's beastly mitts!

FWIW, I vote circus performer. He looks too "pretty" in the face to be a boxer or wrestler. There isn't any face damage. I have yet to see a boxer or wrestler who didn't have a nose that looked like it had been broken a couple of dozen times, eyes that hadn't taken blows or ears that didn't show telltale signs of cauliflower. His build is too slight, chest doesn't seem husky enough. He does show arm muscles, strength. Both the hands of the man on our left and the performer show signs of strenuous work that would be associated with circus performers; however, the knuckles aren't swollen like one participating in bare knuckle boxing, fisticuffs. The man on our left shows more signs of the so-called manly arts of self defense - boxing and wrestling. The background of the pic looks more like the inside of a tent rather than a photographer's studio. I tried editing the OP's pictures , the original and the scan, but nothing more could I glean from them as to occupation. Am including them anyways.

I meant to add to my reply that the facial struture of the performer - nose, cheek bones, chin - look very similar to the man on our right. They could be father and son or at least brothers. Can't tell about the man on our left for as others have pointed out he may have moved when the pic was taken or "punch drunk." Then again rather than being "punch drunk" he looks more like a sullen child that rather be anywhere then where he is. The more I look at the face on our left, he does seem to have a similar narrow face with hollow or flat cheeks as the man on our right. I bet they are all brothers or father and 2 sons.

I think you are right. They do have the same facial features. That begs the question, are they at his circus performance? And that's why the tent is in the background. Or do you think they would all be part of the circus?

I think the painted backdrop is supposed to be outdoors with trees, but it's fallen down on one side. It doesn't look like a tent to me. I vote for boxer. We think of them as brawny today, but early boxers were pretty wimpy looking. I googled images of 19th century boxers and some are with managers who look a lot like these guys.
