    Hi everyone!

I’ve been asked to restore this old bench. Has anyone seen anything like this? I’m finding similar styles, but nothing exact. On the legs are caps that have a horse shoe design on them. One of the legs is missing half the cap. If I can find replacements, cool! If not (Which I assume will be the case) id like to know what wood these cap moldings are made of.

    Thanks!

Oh and we are from the Susquehanna Valley here in York/Lancaster Pennsylvania. The bench is from this area as well, if that helps at all I’m unsure!

I think it's circa 1900; @verybrad may know the rest. My dad's model railroad was the Orange Valley & Susquehanna; he was a New Jersey kid. I've been in both Lancaster and York more than once.

Looks like press-in caning so not as old as you might think. Finish is deteriorated so hard to tell wood. Maybe mahogany or something stained to mimic mahogany.

Looks like a vanity seat I had that came with a 1920s vanity way back when I used to refinish furniture.

Thanks everyone! My wife and and I make up a small restoration company and have been running for about 6 months now. Learning a lot. I figured it wasn’t anything rare or too old with the spline. Nails that held in the molding were modern as well. Just incredibly weathered. I suggested the molding we painted a color similar to the stain (black cherry) as im almost certain they wouldn’t take a stain im sure!

My wife takes care of all the caning, so she’s gonna spruce up the caning. Worst comes to worst we will just replace the webbing and try to preserve the spline, but it might look good to replace. We will see!

    Thanks again everyone!
