German Copper Trunk

Saw this at the local mall. It was priced over 1k but I wonder if it is something special or not?

Nice, but desperately overpriced. It was awarded a prize - or as a prize? - by a newspaper. Exhibition piece.

 

Neat but I'd proceed like this: Have three crisp new C-notes in one hand, fanned out for easy visual counting, and confidently hold it out to the shopkeepers-who will say it is on consignment bsbsbs, then ask them to call the owner and make the offer. They will probably decline. Send someone else in a few days later to offer them $350. You tried anyway, and I don't see it being worth any more.

 

It's only worth the thousand if you love it and want to live with it and never sell it. But it is really overpriced. If it was 1847 maybe, but it's from 1947.

 

How much does it weigh? What are the dimensions?

I''d love to own one. I think it might just be a retail price, which is not bad given that this thing seems kind of rare.

 

It's cute, but $1,000+ for THIS? I don't think anyone would pay that.

 

I don't know for sure. It was heavy as hell. Not that big, maybe about 30" long.

 

So at $3/lb, there is some significant value in just the copper, I'd guess a few hundred.

I'm guessing total copper weight on the whole trunk is under 10 lbs of thin copper sheet, like we used to get in the "Copper Craft" kits at Christmas. With those you put the thin copper sheet over a plastic form of an Indian chief's head (or whatever) and shaped the copper to the form with the end of a little wooden stick, then patinated it with stinky fluid from a little bottle.

I remember those. Kids these days probably have a video game simulation of the process.

I was enthralled with this chest thinking it was made of solid copper. It looked burly and thinking of the weight boggled my mind. It would make it a lot more practical if it were made of wood with copper sheet over it. I suppose I'm not as tickled by it if that is the case. It is still a really nice chest, but in light of that I don't know if I could spend a grand on it. Good God, shipping to Alaska on it would be insane too! I suppose that is why we don't see many chests or oak furniture etc. at all up here, unless they were made here or shipped up for free for military families by Uncle Sam.
Although, we have a lot of particle board these days and that stuff is pretty darn heavy for a material with no resilience whatsoever. Thank you Wal Mart...
