Hey everyone! Got this interesting book that I assume is German. The only numbers on it are 1808.... its 20 inches in length. You can see the ink has been stamped into the pages. I would like to know more about this book.... any other examples like this? and maybe approximate value. Also stay tuned because i have another really unique book with lots of cool artwork . Thank you in advance for all answers! 20201222_202327_compress28.jpg 20201222_202415_compress98.jpg 20201222_202452_compress6.jpg 20201222_202517_compress86.jpg 20201222_202826_compress42.jpg 20201222_202552_compress72.jpg 20201222_202727_compress60.jpg

It is prominently marked Vienna. Looks like German Romantic poetry.

We do know from the GoodReads site that this is not a first edition.

"In it, Wieland criticizes enthusiasm and dogmatism and instead pleads - in the spirit of enlightenment - for a measured, cosmopolitan way of thinking and living."

Just imagine. He'd be appalled by the current state of affairs.

only a masochist would read that stuff today. all these Germans of the South were hidden Pietists that never liberated themselves from the Churches and mostly followed an ideological snake-trail.
this edition here is interesting insofar as it comes from Vienna and was most probably a private print by Degen, which was lateron rebound.
Franzl the Kaiser of Austria who didn't kow himself if he was the first or the second would not have been amused if that book was officially available.
