Red marble table. What is it for?

Does anyone know the reason for the marble lining the onside of the cabinet?

 

Does marble need a reason? But seriously, think marble, top & bottom, was because both surfaces were likely to have to stand up to moisture in a way wood could not.

 

Actually is marble on all sides except the door. I have seen that Victorian pieces are very specific of their use. I asked because I have looked throughout the web about consoles like this and none of them had marble lining. They were just wood. But thank you for your response

 

Wonder, then, if we have been on the wrong track, whether the main compartment would have ice & the whole piece be related to the world of food & drink?

Marble would be more sanitary and durable than wood over time.

From the link Deborah posted. The insides don't match. One is square, the other rounded. Also there appears to be something in the back of the lower one.

I just don't see the need to line the whole cupboard with marble for a chamber pot. The inside base, maybe because it is easier to clean. But the sides and top as well. Doesn't make sense. @verybrad

 

Have no explanation for the marble lining other than maybe because they could.... to make it more deluxe.
