I considered Gagnon, but.. Knew I should be thinking in terms of letter combinations that are pronounceable in French, even if weird for English. So glad that helped.

Is Quebecois pronunciation different? In Parisian French it would be Gah-nyonh, with nh standing in for that nasal way N is pronounced in French, bold is accented syllable.

I had a classmate whose last name was Chagnon. Of course it was Shag-non where we lived. Also knew a Couture whose family pronounced it Koocher. One never know, do one?

I speak French. I have French ex colleagues who used to insist on speaking English at meetings involving Quebecois.

 

I can imagine. I regularly watch TV5, I can understand the French, Swiss, Belgian programmes, but have trouble understanding the French Canadian (not just Québécois in this case) programmes.

Yes, you are correct.

 

I know when I overhear French spoken with what to my American ears sounds somewhat like an American accent, speakers are probably Quebecois. I have less difficulty understanding it than French spoken by a Frenchman.
