Couldn't resist buying this. My kind of art. Earthy and crude with something interesting going on. And the price at a few bucks was right.

Probably a hobbyist and a young one at that. Not much ego with just their initials.

    Inscribed on back,"Cowboy & Indians. 1945. Texas.

IMG_20180112_092708.jpg IMG_20180112_092708-1.jpg The canvas board looks 1960's. Is the artist implying that this
    scene took place in 1945?
I have a neighbor that thinks the Titanic sunk in the 1990's. (the decade the movie came out) So, anything's possible.

And what tribe of Indians are these? Was that made clear in the painting?

all you can do is extrapolate from what's seen.
Horseback Indians wearing buckskin, watching a covered wagon train pushing westward, in a valley thru the mountains.....

The westward expansion in the USA gives a time frame....but other than that....

1945 is when it was painted...I'd presume.

Would you be kind enough to post a full photograph of the front and back of your piece including frame? As well as any markings on canvas board that leads you to believe it might be from the 1960s? That will ensure you get the best response possible from forum members.

Thanks. I'm having some trouble getting my pictures into my email on my phone.

I based my presumption.. (I'm learning a lot from this site about art so hopefully I presume less and less),...on the label on the back.

"Vanguard I canvas panel from Hunt Mfg" New Masters Fine Arts Division Statesville NC".

Googling the company, Hunt Mfg didn't acquire the New Masters Fine arts division until the late 60's. That was
    my reasoning.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I would have thought some place a little west of Texas... but am not familiar with all of Texas landscape. Maybe western Texas?

Wagon trails weren't random. They were well-known, well-traveled thoroughfares. Here's the main ones that crossed Texas.

I did go through El Paso once, but traveled there during the night so didn't see much of the landscape. There are mountains there, which is why I suggested western Texas. Other parts of Texas that I've been in had nothing like this. On the map that @Debora posted there is a black dot where Texas, Mexico, and New Mexico come together. That is El Paso's location.

Might be the Davis Mountains. At any rate, with a bit of research (and if not a fantasy landscape,) someone should be able to (roughly identify) location.

Bev aka thelmasstuff Colored pencil artist extraordinaire ;)

It could just be a fantasy painting by some guy who watched too many cowboy movies. It may not depict any particular tribe.

I think it looks like someone watched too many cowboy movies too. A possible guess at the Indian if they are really intended to be a specific tribe might be Apache.

This looks like a kid's painting. Someone not too familiar with horses. Looking at the front legs, the knees are wrong. But it is charming, and someone put a lot of thought into it. I like that.
